Questions about the license

Question 1

Q - I thought there is a fee to use StudioTax. So far nothing has popped up to ask for payment. Is this an issue?
A - You can download, install and use StudioTax without needing a license. You will need a license to transmit and/or print your return.

Question 2

Q - I’m a student and have a low income. Do I need a license to use StudioTax?
A - We are still offering the software for free for users with total income(line 15000) less than 20K and for our northern residents (NT, YT, NU). In this case you will not need a license or need to activate StudioTax 2023 in order to Netfile and print your returns. When determining the eligibility, the amounts of lines 11600 and line 14700 are excluded from line 15000. Also, for linked returns, both returns are evaluated together and the combined total limit is 40K.

Question 3

Q - How many returns I can transmit using one license?
A - Please note that:
1- One licence will allow you to file up to 10 returns (StudioTax2023 rule).
2- In one computer you will be able to create up to 20 returns (CRA rule).
So, there is two different counters: Created returns and transmitted returns using the same licence.
The transmitted returns counter is not visible for you and will be incremented only when you file a return over 20k.
The created returns counter can be seen in the bottom of the window (windows version), it will be incremented every time you press "Create a new return" and use the wizard or open an existing return and change the SIN. it is a CRA requirement, and we can not change it as it can affect our certification process.
The returns you already created are already counted and reinstalling the software or deleting the returns won’t reset it.

Question 4

Q - I bought a license last year. Can I use it to activate StudioTax for the current tax season or do I have to get a new license?
A - Yes, you need a new licence every tax year. Every year we release a new version for the current tax year. You will need a new licence every tax year, this is the norm in the tax industry.
